Paeonia lactiflora, a well-known herbaceous flower of the Paeoniaceae family, flourishes during its growing season with plenty of sunlight, producing lush and vibrant blooms.
While it flourishes in well-lit conditions, it can also endure light shade during development.
During the flowering phase, Paeonia lactiflora benefits from a slight reduction in temperature and increased humidity to prevent sunburn, which helps extend its ornamental appeal. However, excessive shading can hinder its growth, leaving the plant weak, unable to blossom, or producing only sparse flowers.
With their large, colorful blooms and diverse varieties, peonies often grace garden patches, creating a spectacular display when in full bloom. They take center stage in modern parks and flower beds, lining pathways, roadsides, or woodland edges, sometimes cultivated alongside dwarf or creeping flowers. Certain gardens are entirely dedicated to peonies, known as peony gardens.
Beyond their ornamental value, Paeonia lactiflora is a prized cut flower, perfect for vases or baskets. If cut when the buds are on the verge of blooming and stored in a cold cellar, the flowers can stay fresh for several months. Heavier varieties are favored for cut flowers, with single-petal blooms beautifully displayed in vases, where they retain their charm for a few days before the petals gently fall.

Widely distributed,Paeonia lactiflora thrives in regions such as North Korea, Japan, and Mongolia, showcasing its adaptability to a broad ecological range. Modern research has uncovered that the roots of Paeonia lactiflora contain various compounds, including paeoniflorin, benzoic acid, and others.
Paeoniflorin, a primary component, demonstrates a wide range of effects, such as enhancing coronary and myocardial blood flow, promoting vasodilation, countering acute myocardial ischemia, and inhibiting platelet aggregation. It also possesses sedative, analgesic, antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-ulcer properties, and notably boosts immune function, making it a valuable component in traditional medicine.
Traditionally, Paeonia lactiflora has been used to treat chest and hypochondriac distension and pain. Pharmacological studies also highlight the hepatoprotective effects of white peony, which enhances the phagocytic activity of hepatic macrophages by 30%.
Consequently, white peony -based treatments have proven effective in addressing conditions like cirrhosis and ascites, offering benefits such as cathartic relief, pain management, symptom alleviation, and dispelling harmful influences without depleting positive energy.
Red peony, in contrast, is highly valued for its ability to remove blood stasis, relieve pain, cool the blood, and reduce swelling, making it particularly effective in treating issues such as irregular menstruation and amenorrhea. In clinical gynecology, red peony, often combined with rhubarb preparations, is commonly used to treat acute and chronic pelvic inflammatory diseases.
When white peony is paired with white atractylodes, it helps address liver and spleen dysfunction and excessive menstruation, while combining it with Chinese wolfberry supports the management of menopausal symptoms. The extensive use of Paeonia lactiflora in Chinese medicine, especially in obstetrics and gynecology, is due to its properties of nourishing blood, astringing yin, tonifying without being greasy, softening the liver, supporting the middle, relieving pain, and reducing excessive sweating.
In essence, Paeonia lactiflora is a steadfast companion in women’s health, standing as the flower of choice in their medicinal journey.
In addition to its aesthetic allure, Paeonia lactiflora holds a significant place in traditional Chinese medicine. Revered for its blood-nourishing and yin-astringent qualities, it provides a holistic approach to women’s health. Beyond its applications in gynecology, this versatile herbaceous flower is also beneficial in treating a variety of other conditions.
